‘Differences were meant not to divide but to enrich’

RE is an integral part of everyday life for many children, especially in the culturally and religiously diverse community of Braiswick. RE helps the children to build their sense of belonging and identity, which allows them to flourish in their communities and as citizens in a diverse society. It teaches children to develop respect for others, including people of different faiths and beliefs and helps to challenge prejudice. Children will learn about different religions, belief systems, festivals and rituals. Religious Education enhances their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It allows our learners to develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religions and moral issues. It also supports them to develop an idea of the influence of beliefs, values and traditions on individuals, communities, societies and cultures, from the local to the global.

At Braiswick we follow The Saffron Academy Trust scheme of work for Religious Educational studies. The scheme has been adapted to suit the needs of our diverse community and allows for children to have time and space to explore their own beliefs, values and traditions, and those of others in an engaging way. We actively encourage children who wish to share their experiences to do so in a safe and supporting, respectful atmosphere. We aim to support children to develop positive attitudes of respect towards people of all faiths and those without a faith. Within our teaching of RE we seek to encourage empathy, generosity and compassion. This encourages children to consider their responsibilities to themselves and others and to explore how they might contribute to their communities and the wider world.

During our religious education lessons, children will be learning all about many different religions including: Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Sikhism, Judaism, Humanism and a look at Secularism too. We have created a balance across the religions to ensure coverage of all of these faiths within their time at Braiswick Primary. Where possible children will visit places of worship or visitors of the religion being studied will be invited into the school. In addition to our RE lessons within class, some religion learning may also take place in assemblies.
