PE

The main principles of PE teaching at Braiswick Primary are those of human expression and human impact.

Human Expression

For many children, school is the primary source of a multitude of experiences, including sport. Through PE lessons, after school clubs and competitions, pupils are given the chance to develop and refine a wealth of skills.

PE at Braiswick reinforces the pupil’s understanding of mental wellbeing and emotional intelligence. With regular opportunities for physical activity, our students have the chance to de-stress, clear their heads and be mindful.

Each sport that is taught at Braiswick, whether team or individual, requires an ability to interact with others and provides a feeling of belonging. This interaction builds on an ability to empathise with those around us, engaging with others and allows us to express ourselves both emotionally and creatively.

With everything we teach at Braiswick, we encourage the idea of a growth mindset, an understanding that you will need to practise in order to improve, and that, often, that is incredibly challenging. Competition, both in PE lessons and with other schools, helps pupils to develop confidence and experience in their chosen sport, learning from others and themselves.

Human Impact

From EYFS, pupils are encouraged to identify changes in themselves before and after PE, progressing to understand, and compare, the physical and mental effect PE has on us. This understanding should support them throughout their lives in seeking a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Through PE lessons and competitions, pupils are taught to work with partners and teams, communicating effectively and supporting each other to overcome learning barriers. The rules and regulations of each sport are also a key element of our pupil’s learning, enabling them to compete effectively and fairly. This consistent teamwork encourages pupils to build relationships with both their peers and staff members, through both internal and external competitions, sports days and extra-curricular activities.
