At Braiswick. we value the importance of modern foreign language learning and all the skills that this brings with it. Our vision is for children to develop their language learning skills and become all-round global citizens. We teach Spanish in order to prepare our children for a rapidly changing world. Learning a language prepares our children for life in modern Britain, in which work and activities increasingly involve using other languages to English. We want to equip the children with skills that they can use throughout their lives.
Through learning Spanish, we hope that our children will develop an awareness of cultural differences and develop a tolerance of differences within society. As well as being open-minded and adventurous in all aspects of their learning.
Pupils use languages to communicate information responsibly, creatively and without discrimination. They learn how to employ languages to enable access to rapid ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures. Primary languages is also about the broader curriculum – about understanding language and identity, about developing an international outlook, and about learning. Increased capability in the use of languages promotes initiative and independent learning and encourages diversity within society.
At Braiswick Primary, we aim to spark a love of languages within the learners through the use of engaging, interactive lessons. Lessons will cover oral, written and reading aspects of the language. They will be learning about the sounds and written forms of Spanish. They will learn the basics of the language and how to begin to communicate within it. We will also learn about the culture and some history of the language as well. We hope that all of these combined will help our children to develop a positive attitude towards learning a new language.
Basic Spanish learning will begin in Reception and then gradually progress throughout their time at Braiswick. We aim for all lessons to be as fun, engaging and as interactive as possible. We aim to encourage in all of our learners a love of learning and of language learning. One that will hopefully stay with them throughout their learning careers and perhaps spark an interest and passion for the future. By the time children leave Braiswick, at the end of Year 6, we hope that they will be equipped with the skills to hold some basic conversations in Spanish, read some Spanish with growing confidence and be able to apply their skills to other aspects of their learning.
